Granny Magick
Appalachian witches are sometimes know as water witches or witch doctors as well. For a quick overview of Granny Magick, see these excellent articles by Ginger Strivelli of the Appalachian Pagan Alliance.
Spells & Sayings To counteract witchcraft stick thirteen pins into a chicken heart (without the chicken attached) and then burn it. Break the breastbone of a chicken while making a wish and it will come true. Mistletoe offers a variety of protection against lightening (preferably mistletoe growing naturally on your property). It can be carried in the pockets for personal protection. It can be tied to a doorway for protection of a house or barn. It can also be hung on a farm animal for their protection (cows are often stuck by lightening). Lightening will not strike a house or barn inhabited by swallows. A whistling girl and a crowing hen are sure to come to no good end. If a rooster crows at night, the owner of that crow will soon die. "Lying boys and cackling hens come to no good end." Don't let birds gather your hair for nesting material: you will go crazy. If you swallow a chicken's heart, you will win the hand of the one you love. Nausea is treated with egg gruel. (Make egg gruel; VERY hard-boil 3 eggs, then grate these into boiled new milk with a pinch of salt.) |
